Types of makeup brushes and what they are used for

Powder Brush

The powder brush is very large and fluffy, and has a dome shape to spread the product evenly on the face. This is to lightly apply loose or pressed powder to your face, without depositing too much product on the skin. Powder brushes are perfect for adding color like blush when you want a more natural, less pigmented result.

NOTE: Always tap powder products off the brush before going to the face.

Foundation Brush

Foundation brush is one of the most commonly used makeup brushes, made of strong and flexible bristles, this type of makeup brush is carefully designed to give a smooth and streak-free finish. Foundation brushes come in different lengths, but which one you choose will depend entirely on personal preference. It achieves a flawless finish.

NOTE: It is very important to wash your foundation brush regularly to keep your skin clean and healthy. When you wash brushes, use your fingers to reshape them while they're drying.

Stippling Brush

This type of brush creates a flawless, airbrushed base. Stippling means applying makeup in small dots that are very close to each other so that the end result is a flawless look.  It can be used to apply foundation, blush, bronzer, powder and highlighters. The top of the brush has duo-fiber bristles, making for a light, gentle application that feels very natural. These brush heads have a very light and feathery feel.

NOTE: It is important to wash your stippling brushes regularly to prevent bacteria from growing.

Contour Brush

This type of brush is best for applying and blending concealers and contouring sticks and palettes. It is an angled brush or flat brush, which has soft or dense hair. To use, apply the contour to the hollows of your cheeks, and then use a stippling motion to blend it into the skin. As the product begins to mix, switch to circular motions, being careful to keep the product in the proper spot.

Blush Brush

Blush brushes usually have medium density, which helps spread pigment without streaks or patches. However, brushes for blush are generally a little sturdier, as they cover a smaller area than powder brushes. It is used to apply blush, bronzer and highlighter.

NOTE: When applying blush, try to avoid Raggedy-Anne-reminiscent red circles on your cheeks.

Eyeshadow Brush

A simple eye shadow brush is a small, usually thick brush for applying eye shadow to the eyelid and upper eye area. This brush is very compact and is shaped like a foundation brush, but the bristles are more dense. The bristles of this particular brush are short and synthetic. This brush is important for creating a smooth base for any eyeshadow application.

Eyeshadow Crease Brush

This brush is used to apply eyeshadow to the crease of your eyelids. This is also necessary for blending shadows. It's very important that you apply crease color with as much control as possible to create your desired look, especially if you're aiming for a smokey eye or other intricate styles. These brushes are also angled and have a small, rounded tip that evenly distributes your eye products.

NOTE: Be sure to inspect the area several times to ensure it is completely mixed.

Angled Eyeshadow Brush

These brushes can be softer than angled eyeliner brushes, which are very thin and flat. Use it to add deep color to the corner of your eye, cover up blemishes, and add a contrasting color to your crease.  Using the angled edge, apply the darker shade in a "V" shape to the outer corner of the eye, then blend for a smoky effect. It is usually made of soft, densely packed bristles that pick up and distribute the product evenly.

 Highlighter Brush

Highlight brushes look very different from most other types of makeup brushes. They are fan-shaped and these brushes generally have soft, densely packed bristles and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit different highlighting needs.  Highlighter brushes are best for adding a luminous dimension to your nose, cheeks and above your cheekbones.

NOTE: You can use these brushes for cream or powder highlighters, just make sure you use a different brush for different formulations.

Contour Brush

This is an angled brush or a flat brush, with soft or dense bristles used to define your cheekbones and make your face look slimmer or more angular. The first step is to invest in a good angled contour brush, it's important to use angled brushes rather than flat brushes as they allow you to follow the natural curves of your face. It is used with a color slightly darker than your skin color and applied to the areas you want to slim. It has an angled tip, which helps define the lines used in contouring with bronzerThese contour brushes can be used with powder or cream contour products. 

To use, apply the contour to the hollows of your cheeks, and then use a stippling motion to blend it into the skin. As the product begins to mix, switch to circular motions, being careful to keep the product in the proper spot. You can use this technique on any part of your face you want to shape. Many people choose to contour their temples, the sides of their nose, or their jawline for a flattering look.

Eyeliner Brush

The best thing about this brush is that it is a nice sharp eyeliner brush. Eyeliner brush works well with gel or liquid liner. It is used to apply a neat liner just touching the eyelid. It is very small, with a row of short, dense hairs, and is slightly angular with the sharpest fin.

Brow Brush

Eyebrow brushes are traditionally two-sided: one with a spoolie and the other with a flat side, to hold the brows in place and fill in sparse areas. Brow brushes are another powerful tool in your lineup as their features include smoothing, fluffing, and directing hairs to the right place with just a few strokes. It helps distribute brow powder or pencil evenly and control unruly hairs.

Blending Sponge

You might have also heard about makeup blender sponge. It is very easy to use. This beauty tool is also a wonderful applicator for liquid foundationconcealer and powder. You will need this throughout the process. These sponges are often made of materials such as foam or latex and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Make sure to run it under the tap and then drain off the excess water. 

NOTE:  Always clean the sponge after looking at it and let it dry to avoid mold.

Lip Brush

A lip brush is a small, thin and fine brush, which makes it easy to get around the crevices of your mouth. These brushes allow you to apply lipstick with greater precision, with a layer of smooth bristles that work like a paintbrush. They are usually made from a long, thin stick and soft hairs that create a tapered shape. It is used to define the edges of your lips and to apply lip color or lip gloss. A lip brush can help blend different lip colors or lip liner and lipstick together, creating a more natural and seamless look.

Mascara Wand

Mascara wands come in many different shapes and sizes. They help separate and define each lash. Before applying mascara with the spoolie, you can use an eyelash curler for an even more dramatic, full effect. It is used to groom and shape the eyebrows. They are made of various materials with different sizes and bristle distribution patterns such as nylon, plastic, dense bristles, sparse bristles, etc.
