Types of face shapes: choosing the right style

The shape of the face is divided into three parts. The width of the forehead and cheeks, the jaw line and the length of the face. The most common face shapes are oval, round, square and rectangular. These shapes are often used in beauty, fashion, and aesthetics to determine attractive hairstyles and makeup techniques.

What Is The Face Shape And Why Is Important To Understand It?

This quality can help you play with dimension by sculpting your face. The shape of your face can inform how to best contour and sculpt your face. “Whenever you see people sculpting with big lines, it doesn't take cultural nuances into account.

You know which part of your face to highlight. Once you know your face shape, you will be aware of different parts of your face that could use a bit of "pop" to shine. For example, if you have a round face, you can place the blush slightly higher on your cheekbones to emphasize your bone structure.

You know which part of your face to downplay. Knowing the shape of your face will also show you what to downplay. With a contoured chin, wide jaw, one could contour such a square jawline in makeup to help smooth its edges and create an illusion of roundness.

Pick a haircut that works in your favor. Your hairstyle is one major aspect of what would add weight to your face. If you're stuck on choosing a flattering haircut, find out your face shape. Knowledge of the shape brings you closer to that cut that best flatters your features.

How to know your face shape

Knowing your face shape is an easy process. Before you begin, pull back all your hair until your face is free from the mess it has created.

1. Locate the broadest part of your face: Stand in front of a mirror, and ascertain the widest point of your face (this can be done by sight or using a flexible tape measure). If you have a square forehead, your face is oval. If the fullest part of your face is on the cheekbones, you likely have a round face or heart shape (go on to the next step to find out). If your face appears to be fairly even in width, it is most likely a square shape.

2. Shape of the jaw: The shape of your jaw may also provide clues as to what type of face you have; if it's short or rounded, your face is round. If the jawline appears pointed and narrow, your face is heart-shaped. Should your jawline be really strong and angular, that backs up you being a square-faced individual.

3. Compare facial length and width: If you are still not sure what shape your face is, take a look at the facial length to width proportion. To do this, measure from the most prominent point on your hairline to the tip of your chin, measure from the left extreme side of your face to the right side. If the length of your face is at least that of its width, you might have an oval face. If it is wider than long, you could have either a round or heart shape. If your face is at least twice as long as its width, you probably have a rectangular shape. If length and width are equal, you would have a diamond or square face shape.

There are several types of face shapes:

  • Round face shape
  • Oval face shape
  • Square/rectangular face shape
  • Diamond face shape
  • Triangle/pear face shape
  • Heart face shape

TYPES OF FACE SHAPES

ROUND FACE SHAPE: A round face can be enhanced with makeup techniques that help draw attention to the features. Round faces are smaller with soft features and a broad hairline. In a round face shape, the width and length of your face are approximately equal, and your jaw and chin are round. The best hairstyles are often jagged pixie cuts and long, layered cuts. These face shapes look great with long hair that elongates the face. Side swept bangs can also add length to a round face.

OVAL FACE SHAPE: The oval face is often considered the most balanced face shape. Oval face shape is a combination of square and round. Because your chin is round, the length of your face is greater than its width. This face shape looks good with any hairstyle. Any length cut looks great.

SQUARE & RECTANGLE FACE SHAPE: Square faces have straight sides and minimal curve at the chin. They also have an angular jaw. For this face shape the forehead, cheekbones and jaw are approximately the same width, being as wide as they are long. Using makeup for square face shapes is a way to accentuate the high points of your face and help make any occasion more beautiful with minimal effort. This face shape should avoid straight lines.

DIAMOND FACE SHAPE: The face shape of a diamond is like a heart. Generally the cheek bones are high and strong. The only difference is that a person with a diamond shape has a narrow forehead and the jaw line is of almost the same width.  A pointed chin and high cheekbones define this face shape.

TRIANGLE & PEAR FACE SHAPE: The jaw in a triangular face is wide, strong and angular like people with a square face and your face is long rather than wide. Their forehead is usually narrow. Short haircuts with messy style are suitable for such faces. This makes the face more harmonious.

HEART FACE SHAPE: One of the greatest features of a heart-shaped face is a thin forehead and narrow chin. A heart-shaped face has a prominent hairline with two round shapes. This face shape looks great with bangs and mid-length to long hair. To balance your sloping jaw, you can wear this style with curls or waves starting below the ears.
